The “Specials” at Barnard Academy offer students a break from academic endeavors and provide scheduled time for practicing skills and crafts that stretch beyond the limits of the regular curriculum. These special classes present an opportunity for students to test their abilities, investigate new worlds, and learn out-of-the box thinking in a safe and supportive environment.
Barnard Academy nurtures a wide range of student interests through its Specials. Physical Education class offers safe boundaries and ample room for students to test their strength and agility, and to learn the social skills necessary for group play. Lending extra support to strong, growing bodies, Barnard Academy’s Farm to School program teaches students healthy eating habits and increases student understanding of community awareness and social responsibility.
Spanish and Technology classes encourage new language acquisition and open up fresh intellectual channels for student exploration. And where explorers are found, there is bound to be arts nearby. Barnard Academy’s Art and Music classes cultivate investigative and creative abilities and prepare students for the school’s seasonal community performances and for each student’s personal presentation at the school’s SOS (Show Our Stuff) talent shows.
Despite all good intent, every student suffers a bad day on occasion. When they do, Barnard Academy’s Health and Guidance offices support the mental, social, and physical health of the students so that they can quickly return to the work and play of being a kid.
